Speaker Information

Alice Hughes is a co-founder of PSALM, Inc., where she currently serves as President.  Ms. Hughes received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of the Pacific in Music Education with a choral emphasis. She is also a founder of the West Coast Liturgical Singing Seminar, which has been hosting an annual conference since 1994. She currently serves as co-director at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California, with Anne Schoepp. Ms. Hughes has been directing choral music and teaching voice since 1981. Currently, she is the Visual and Performing Arts Chair and Director of Choral Music at Pacific Collegiate School (grades 7–12) in Santa Cruz, California. In addition she works as a vocal coach and musical director for several theater companies in the Santa Cruz area. Ms. Hughes is a strong advocate for music literacy and spends much of her time developing materials and methods for increasing sight-singing and listening/intonation skills for choirs. Ms. Hughes is a partner with Anne Schoepp in Seraphim Six Productions, which is dedicated to producing fine recordings of Orthodox liturgical music in English and supporting the development of liturgical music. They are nearly finished with the first edition of their complete collection of sheet music for Divine Liturgy for the entire liturgical year.Back to Home page

Fr. Lawrence Margitich is the priest at the OCA parish of the Protection of the Virgin/St. Seraphim in Santa Rosa, California. He has Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, in guitar performance and orchestral conducting (1980) and a Master Divinity from St. Vladimir's Seminary (1984). He directed choirs at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Boston and in Santa Rosa. and has focused on setting special melodies and Znamenny chant in English. He currently serves as the head of the music department of the OCA Diocese of the West, and as a member of the Music Department of the OCA. Back to Home page

Archpriest Stephen Meholick was born in 1952 in Northwestern Pennsylvania. As a young boy he served as apprentice to Cantor Peter Kennis, who learned Ruthenian (Carpatho-Russian) plainchant at St. Nicholas Monastery in Mukechevo. While attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, he lived with Mitred Archpriest Vitaly Sahaidakovsky and studied podobny or special melodies as sung at the Pochaev Lavra in Volhynia. He was ordained deacon in 1975 at St. Tikhon's and assumed the position of seminary choir director and lecturer in liturgics and Church Slavonic. He received his Master's degree from Marywood College in Scranton. In 1979 he was ordained to the priesthood and assigned to Cumberland, Rhode Island. While serving in New England he was appointed chairman of the Diocesan Music Commission and worked with longtime "kliros-mate," His Grace, Archbishop Job. Anne Schoepp, also a co-founder and board member of PSALM, began singing in church choirs at age eight, studied piano, voice, and violin in her youth, and holds a B.A. in Music from Stanford University (1985) with an emphasis in choral conducting and composition. Ms. Schoepp taught piano and voice privately from 1985–1992, has been directing choral and instrumental music since 1984, and has organized the West Coast Liturgical Singing Seminar since its inception in 1994. She composes and arranges church music primarily for use at St. Lawrence Orthodox Church in Felton, California, where she is conductor together with Alice Hughes. She also directs the parish Youth Choir, teaches K–8 music at St. Lawrence Academy, where two of her five children attend, and directs the annual Christmas and Spring musicals. Ms. Schoepp is a partner with Alice Hughes in Seraphim Six Productions, which is dedicated to producing fine recordings of Orthodox liturgical music in English and supporting the development of liturgical music. Fred Squatrito teaches Music Theory/Musicianship, Correlation of the Arts, Piano and Music Performance at Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA. He is the author of several celebrated choral works including Bright Morning Star, and recipient of three California State Cultural Commission commissions. Fred was Senior Fulbright Lecturer in Music at The National University of Costa Rica in 1988 and was United States Information Service featured artist in the same year performing piano concerts at the Sala Villa Lobos in Rio de Janiero, the United States Ambassador's Residence Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and the Eugene O'Neill Cultural Center in San José, Costa Rica. He holds a BA, and an MA from San Jose State University.Back to Home page
